◆◆Details◆◆
Georgia O'Keeffe, a painter who represents 20th-century American art.

Georgia O'Keeffe, the most famous female painter in 20th-century America, spent the last 40 years of her life quietly in an adobe house built on old land in the village of Abiquiu, New Mexico.
Anyone who knows New Mexico will understand that O'Keeffe was fascinated by this land, with its intense light, the stimulating scent of sage, and the wide-open sky. The landscape is as direct and essential as her paintings, and as tough and strong as her character.
In 1979, seven years before O'Keeffe's death, she allowed Colorado photographer Myron Wood to photograph Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. For two and a half years after that, Wood took hundreds of photographs. Of O'Keeffe herself, of people close to her (her manager, Juan Hamilton, her gardener, Steven Lopez, etc.), and above all, of the house, garden, and surrounding landscape that nurtured O'Keeffe.
The 79 photographs reproduced here by Wood are expressed in subtle tones, from pure white to deep black. They not only record the appearance of the house but also evoke the spirit of the place where O'Keeffe lived. Here are the sun-bleached animal bones and the smooth shapes of river-worn rocks that the painter loved to collect, and the hand-rubbed adobe walls of the buildings that seem to have grown organically from the earth.

Photographs by Myron Wood, text by Christine Taylor Patten, who lived with O'Keeffe in her later years.
