The tradition of decking the halls with boughs of holly at Christmas is celebrated everywhere. While most people enjoy its glossy green prickly leaves and bright crimson berries, less well known is the legend behind the “Christmas berry.” It is said that before the arrival of Jesus, holly berries were always white. When holly was used to make the crown of thorns, for the crucifixion of Jesus, his blood colored the berries red. A color they keep to this day. Traditionally represented in wreaths and garlands, and now a Painted Pony, red and green holly branches symbolize the colors of Christmas.
