Tintype from the 1800s, with a very old piece of paper that is hard to read. to me, it looks like it says Jack Level & Wife Nina Robinson.
Tintypes were very popular in the mid 1800s, as they were the first portrait photographs available to the average family. Be serious looks were very typical for portraits from this era. Exposure times were longer, making it hard to hold a smile perfectly still without blurring the image. Also, smiling wasn't as common in portraits and it was considered more appropriate to have a serious look. Smiling didn't become popular for photographs until the 1920s.
This tintype is a rare window into a different time, showcasing the clothing, hairstyles, and even the societal norms of the 1800s
Please see photos for condition as this is a very old photograph and there is some rust around the edges and darkening of the photo.
